As the aeroglobe settles in its berth, Jack and the Fairfields flatten themselves against the walls of the pit and escape death. Princess Alura, believing that Xalta is on the side of Jack and his friends because of their miraculous escapes, urges them to leave the island. Jack insists on rescuing Vic Hardy first. Meanwhile, Pierce arrives with additional scientific equipment for the completion of the Cosmic Bean Annihilator (he's in with Grood). Pierce pretends he came to rescue Jack and the Fairfields, but he soon lures them into a trap. Locked in a mill storeroom, Jack and Uncle Jim are soon overcome by poisonous gas fumes.
